Uncomplicating a life of faith

In his letters to Timothy and the church in Ephesus, Paul explains the basic tenents of living an uncomplicated faith. Today with all the doctrines and denominational differences living a life of faith in Christ has become complicated and confusing. But, Paul shows Timothy and the Ephesians that living a life of faith is simple and organic.

Here is Paul’s advice for living a simple faith:

Value others;

Respect those who have authority over you so that God will be revered, and the teaching of Christ won’t be cursed. (1 Tim 6:1). And treat fellow believers who have authority with the same respect and help them even more because they support the work of God. (1 Tim 6:2)

Encourage others;

Teach and encourage others with healthy words like the teaching of Christ and of godliness. Avoid debates and contentious controversies because they only cause strife and friction. (1 Tim 6:3-5, Eph 4:29)

Find contentment in all things;

Godliness with contentment is the ultimate goal in this life. Everyone came into the world with nothing, and everyone will leave with nothing. Therefore sustenance and clothing is all we need to be content. Chasing the riches of this world is futile, foolish, and harmful and will lead to ruin. The love of money is the root of all evil, but the love of God is the root of all good. (1 Tim 6:6-10)

Focus your thoughts and passions;

The pursuit of a believer should be to leave the world’s enticements behind and pursue;

  1. A focus on Eternal Life
  2. A constant confession to everyone that Jesus is the giver of life.
  3. A life lived in –
  • Righteousness – this is imputed to all who believe in Christ. To live in righteousness is to always believe in your position of righteousness through Christ before God.
  • Godliness – is a life that continually reflects on the kingdom of heaven and acts in accordance with the kingdom living in our daily course of events.
  • Faith – wholehearted trust in the Father, the Son, and the Spirit of God
  • Love – love others as yourself. Loving others includes forgiving others (Eph 4:31-32)
  • Endurance – bear and abide in whatever circumstance we find ourselves.
  • Gentleness – a gentle person is a humble person and a person that strives for unity and peace recognizing we are one in Christ.

Share with others;

Share every good thing that God gives you and don’t be selfish but instead be gracious and help others. (1 Tim 6:17-19, Eph 4:7-13)

Be sensitive to God and others;

Sensitivity to the desire of God and his Spirit (Eph 4:17-19, Eph 4:30)

Speak the truth of Jesus to all;

Truth of that is in Jesus above all (Eph 4:20-28)

Following these simple reminders from Paul will uncomplicate your daily walk with Christ and bring you peace and satisfaction in your relationship with Jesus and others.
